Overview

Due to updated carrier requirements, phone systems can no longer pass through the original caller’s phone number when forwarding calls to external numbers (such as mobile phones).

This change is part of industry-wide efforts to reduce call spoofing and enforce caller ID verification standards.

What Is Changing

When a call is forwarded from your phone system to an external number:
  • The original caller’s number can no longer be reused as the the Caller ID
  • Carriers will block calls that use unverified caller ID
  • Forwarded calls must now use a verified business number

    How This Affects You

If your system is currently configured to:
    • Redirect calls while maintaining the original callers CID
    • Forward calls without setting the outbound phone number.
    Those calls may begin to:
    • Fail to connect, or
    • Be blocked by the carrier

        Available Options

Option 1: Use a Verified Business Caller ID (Simplest)Forward calls to external numbers using your main business number as caller ID.
        Pros:
        • Reliable call delivery
        • No additional setup for end users
        Cons:
        • Users will not see the original caller’s number
        • All calls appear as your business line
Option 2: Deliver Calls to an Internal Extension (Recommended)Route calls to a user’s extension instead of forwarding to a cell phone.
Users can then receive calls via:
        • Desk phone
        • Vodia desktop app
        • Vodia mobile app
        Pros:
        • Preserves original caller ID
        • Full phone system functionality
        • No carrier restrictions
        Cons:
        • Requires an extension for each user
        • Initial setup may be needed

        Using the Vodia Mobile App

For users who need mobility, the Vodia app allows calls to be received on a mobile device while still being treated as an internal extension.
        This ensures:
        • Caller ID is preserved
        • Calls are not blocked by carriers
        • Users can make outbound calls with the correct business identity
